General car detailing questions

How often should I detail my car in Miami? For a daily driver in Miami: exterior maintenance wash monthly, interior clean quarterly, full decontamination detail annually. Ceramic-coated vehicles need less frequent washing due to the hydrophobic self-cleaning effect — contaminants roll off rather than bonding. Vehicles parked near the coast (Brickell, Miami Beach, Coconut Grove) should increase frequency due to salt air deposits.

Does car detailing remove scratches? Paint correction (machine polishing) removes scratches that are within the clear coat layer. Scratches that go through clear coat to base coat or primer cannot be polished out — they require spot respray or touch-up. The simple test: run your fingernail across the scratch. If you can feel it catch, the scratch may be too deep for polishing. If your nail slides over it without catching, it's likely within the clear coat and can be corrected.

Will detailing remove water spots from Miami rain? Light water spots (mineral deposits on the surface) are removed by clay bar decontamination and polishing. Water spots that have etched into the clear coat — visible as permanent rings or hazing in direct sunlight — require paint correction. Miami's wet-dry rain cycles combined with high mineral content in local water make water spot etching more common here than in most cities. The longer water spots sit in Miami's heat, the deeper they etch.

How long does a car detail take in Miami? Exterior wash and interior clean: 2–3 hours. Full detail: 4–6 hours. Single-stage paint correction: 4–6 hours. Two-stage correction: 8–12 hours. Ceramic coating: 1–2 days. PPF front end: 1–2 days. Most maintenance details and single-correction jobs are same-day if you drop off in the morning.

How long after detailing can I wash my car? After a standard detail with sealant: 24 hours before washing. After ceramic coating: 7 days before first wash, pH-neutral hand wash only for the first 30 days. Avoid automatic car washes after ceramic coating — the brushes and friction create swirl marks that degrade ceramic performance.

What's the difference between a detail and a car wash? A car wash removes surface dirt. A detail decontaminates (clay bar removes bonded contamination the wash can't reach), polishes (corrects paint defects), and protects (ceramic, sealant, or wax application). A detail done annually in Miami preserves paint condition; a car wash maintains cleanliness between details.

Ceramic coating questions

Is ceramic coating worth it in Miami? For vehicles parked outdoors, yes — almost universally. Miami's UV index (9–11 daily) is among the highest in the US. Unprotected clear coat begins to oxidize and fade within 2–3 years of outdoor parking. Ceramic coating provides 2–4 years of UV blocking, hydrophobic protection, and chemical resistance under Miami conditions. For a vehicle you'll keep 3+ years, it pays for itself in maintained resale value alone.

How long does ceramic coating last in Miami? Entry-level products: 1–2 years. Mid-tier professional coatings: 2–3 years. Premium products (Gtechniq, IGL Kenzo, Gyeon Quartz): 3–5 years with proper maintenance. Miami's UV and heat are harder on coatings than northern climates, so Miami-specific lifespan estimates run slightly shorter than manufacturer ratings based on temperate climates.

Can ceramic coating be applied mobile in Miami? No. Ceramic coating requires humidity below 50–60% and temperature-controlled conditions for proper chemical bonding. Miami's outdoor humidity averages 65–80% year-round. High humidity causes the coating to cure prematurely, producing high spots and uneven hydrophobic performance. See our mobile vs shop detailing guide for the full explanation.

Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips? No. Ceramic coating has surface hardness that resists fine scratches, but it provides no protection against rock chips or impacts. For chip protection, paint protection film (PPF) is the correct product. Many drivers apply PPF to the front end (highest chip risk) and ceramic coating over the rest of the vehicle.

Will ceramic coating hide existing scratches or swirl marks? No — it will make them more visible. Ceramic creates a high-gloss, optically flat surface that enhances reflection. Any surface defects show more clearly under ceramic than under uncoated paint. Paint correction must be done before ceramic application to remove defects. See our paint correction guide for details.

Paint correction questions

My car looks fine in normal light but has swirls in direct sun — do I need correction? Yes, if you're planning ceramic coating or PPF. Those swirls are defects in the clear coat that will be permanently locked in under ceramic. If you're not planning protection, it's a quality-of-life decision — corrected paint has significantly better gloss and depth, especially on dark colors.

How many times can paint correction be done on the same car? Depends on clear coat thickness. Most vehicles start with 80–120 microns of OEM clear coat. Each correction removes 0.5–3 microns. A properly executed correction every 3–5 years, tracked with a paint depth gauge, gives most vehicles 3–5 correction cycles before clear coat becomes too thin to polish safely. This is why tracking paint thickness matters.

Does Miami's heat affect paint correction results? Yes — working on paint in direct sun heats panels, accelerates compound flash-off, and makes it difficult to accurately assess swirl removal. Correction is best done in shade or indoors with controlled lighting. All correction at Galaxy Sound is done in our shop with proper lighting for accurate panel inspection.

Paint protection film questions

Does PPF yellow in Miami's sun? Modern PPF from XPEL, SunTek, and 3M uses UV-stable film with an optical clarity topcoat. Yellowing is associated with older-generation polyurethane films. Quality PPF from current brands maintains optical clarity for its service life (7–10 years) in Miami's UV. Avoid discount PPF brands that don't publish UV stability data.

Can I apply ceramic coating over PPF? Yes — this is actually the recommended system for high-value vehicles. PPF handles physical impacts; ceramic coating on top adds hydrophobic protection and UV resistance over the film. The ceramic is applied to the film's surface, not the paint directly.

Questions about leasing and detailing

Is car detailing safe on a leased vehicle? Yes. Professional detailing, paint correction, and ceramic coating are fully non-damaging. PPF is removable without paint damage when applied and removed by a professional. Lease return inspections check for damage — a properly detailed and protected vehicle passes without issues. We detail many leased BMWs, Mercedes, Audis, and Porsches from Coral Gables and Brickell.

Should I get ceramic coating on a leased car? It depends on your lease term and parking situation. For a 3-year lease with outdoor parking, ceramic coating during the first few months protects the paint from Miami UV for the duration — keeping it in better condition for the return inspection. For short leases (24 months) with garage parking, it may not be necessary. Contact us and we'll give you an honest recommendation based on your specific situation.
